Welsh language research

We work across a wide range of Welsh language policy areas, including research on language use and strategic planning for Welsh language development.

  • Welsh Government (2019-21)

Between 2019 and 2021, Arad undertook an evaluation of More Than Just Words, the follow-on strategic framework for Welsh language services in health, social services and social care, 2016-19. The aim of the evaluation was to assess how, and to what extent More Than Just Words had achieved its intended aim to promote and support the use of the Welsh language in health, social services and social care in Wales. It also aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to implementing the strategy’s objectives. The evaluation reviewed the extent to which each of the strategy’s seven key objectives had been met (i.e., National and local leadership; and national policy; Mapping, auditing, data collection and research; Service planning, commissioning, Contracting and workforce planning; Promotion and engagement; Professional education; Welsh in the workplace; Regulation and inspection).

  • (National Centre for Learning Welsh, 2017-18)

Arad evaluated the Work Welsh scheme, which provides opportunities to employees to learn Welsh or further develop their Welsh in order to meet the business needs of their employer. The programme involves a series of support services for employers (particularly within the public sector) and employees, including online, intensive and residential courses. The evaluation involved developing an evaluation framework and gathering feedback from a large range of learners and employers to inform the on-going development of the scheme.

  • (Welsh Government, 2018)

Arad and Bangor University are currently evaluating the Cymraeg for Kids programme, which aims to increase the number of children in Welsh medium education. Its objectives are to support parents, prospective parents and other family members in introducing and using Welsh at home, transmit Welsh to their children, and to support children’s language development. The evaluation involves the development of a theory of change for the programme, review of monitoring data, research with Cymraeg for Kids delivery and strategic staff, and research with parents attending Cymraeg for Kids activities.

  • (Mudiad Meithrin, 2017-18)

Arad undertook a review of the structures and processes Mudiad Meithrin has in place to ensure the organisation is able to support Welsh Government’s strategy of achieving a million Welsh language speakers by 2050. The work included reviewing the various programmes and support activities Mudiad Meithrin has in place to develop the Welsh-medium childcare sector in Wales.
